Custom Cutting Tools

Precision-engineered cutting tools built for your machine, your material, and your job.

Custom cutting tools have always been the specialty at CGG Schmidt. For nearly a century we have designed and manufactured tooling that solves the woodworking problems off-the-shelf products can’t — and that experience is exactly why shops across the industry bring us their toughest jobs. Whether you run a shaper, moulder, saw, CNC router, planer, or double-end tenoner, we can engineer the right tool to get your job done correctly, efficiently, and economically.

We understand both the tool and the machine it mounts on. That combination lets us recommend the proper tool type, cutting tip, and cutting angle for your exact application — not a close approximation, but the tool your job actually calls for. When you call, you talk directly to seasoned Schmidt Sales Engineers who help you specify the right solution from the start.

Tooling for Every Woodworking Machine

We manufacture cutting tools for virtually every woodworking machine on your floor. Each tool is matched to the machine and the operation, with cutting tips selected to suit the species you’re working and the finish you need:

  • Shaper cutters and wing cutters for profiling, grooving, and shaping
  • Moulder knives and corrugated back knives for high-volume profile work
  • CNC router tooling for modern automated production
  • Planer and jointer knives for clean, accurate surfacing
  • Saw tooling for ripping and crosscutting applications
  • Double-end tenoner and hauncher tooling for joinery production

Cutting Tips for Any Application

The right cutting edge depends on the wood you’re working and the volume you’re running. We provide a full range of cutting materials so each tool performs at its best and lasts as long as possible:

  • S-Alloy — a high-performance alloy CGG Schmidt pioneered for woodworking in the early 1960s
  • Carbide-tipped — long edge life for abrasive materials, composites, and high-volume runs
  • Solid steel — economical, easily reground tooling for softer woods and general work

Not sure which material fits your job? Tell us what you’re cutting and how much, and we’ll recommend the most cost-effective option for your run.

Don’t See the Tool You Need? Just Ask.

Our catalog covers a wide range, but custom work is where we excel — so if you don’t see exactly what you’re looking for, ask us. Send your specifications, a sketch, or a picture of the profile you need, and our engineers will take it from there. We can manufacture tools for most woodworking machines to meet unusual requirements, and we’re constantly improving our manufacturing methods to deliver the best possible cutting tool at the most economical price.

Frequently Asked Questions

What woodworking machines do you make cutting tools for?

We manufacture custom cutting tools for shapers, moulders, saws, CNC routers, planers, jointers, and double-end tenoners. If you run it, there’s a strong chance we can tool for it — just ask.

Can you make a tool from my drawing or sample?

Yes. Send us a sketch, a wood sample, a photo of the profile, or your specifications, and our engineers will design and manufacture a tool to match. Custom work is our specialty.

What cutting tip materials do you offer?

We offer S-Alloy, carbide-tipped, and solid steel cutting tips. The best choice depends on the wood you’re cutting and your production volume — we’re happy to recommend the right option for your application.

Do you make both custom and standard cutting tools?

Both. We carry a broad range of standard tooling and we specialize in custom work for unique or unusual requirements. If you can’t find what you need, contact us and we’ll engineer it.

TYPES OF TOOLS AND THE TYPE OF MACHINES ON WHICH THEY CAN BE USED

MATERIALS USED IN TIPS OF CUSTOM CUTTING TOOLS

DIAMOND
• Can help reduce machine downtime
drastically.
• Retains sharpness 100 to 300 times longer than carbide.
• Ideal for long runs where maintaining a precise profile is required.
• Cuts smoother than Carbide.
• Must be used on power-fed operations.
• Recommended for all types of wood and is excellent on abrasive materials such as MDF or plywood.

S-ALLOY
• Recommended for most solid hard and
soft woods.
• Holds a cutting edge longer, cuts smoother, feeds with less resistance.
• Can be sharpened to finer edge than
carbide.
• Especially effective on cross-grain cutting.
• Can be honed for longer wear between sharpening.
• Is sharpened with aluminum oxide or borazon only.

TUNGSTEN CARBIDE
• Recommended for hardboard, plywood, chipboard, masonite and any other
glue-bonded materials.
• Must be used for highly abrasive materials.
• C-2 carbide used for most applications. Better grades available when requirements demand it.
• C-3 carbide, standard on our panel
raising cutters.
• C-4 carbide, standard on our insert tools.

TOOL STEELS
• Can be ground to a super sharp cutting edge for soft and hardwood applications.
• Not recommended for cutting more abrasive materials such as particle board, masonite, etc.
• Hardened to Rockwell C60-62.
• M2 & M3 High Speed Steels, the industry standard for long life and easy grinding.
• XLW HP (Speed Steel) for Xtra Long Wear.
– has similar characteristics to M-2.
– provides good wear life.
• T1 High Speed Steel Rich in Tungsten, this Alloy Steel has proven itself when it comes to long runs and grinding ease. Available in
corrugated back knives, thin knives and Terminus knives only.
• Schmidt Super Steel A high quality steel
specially treated to produce an extraordinarily hard surface that won’t chip, peel or flake. 50% longer run times in solid woods, than M2 HSS. Special order
